Irrigation
The whole surface destined for seed production is done
with irrigation due to the fact that the climate is
Mediterranean dry, therefore rain is uncommon between
the sowing and the crop. The most common form of irrigation
is done by ruts. The water used comes from the melting
of snow from the Andes Mountain during summer seasons.
Other
more technical forms of irrigation like pivots or reels
are more common every day (20% of our current surface
presents technical irrigation ) , wich are more efficient
and give us better management of the water. The water source
for this irrigations corresponds to snow water or deep
wells.
Field
In the productions of seed the plots of production have
an average size between 5 and 150 hectares, being the
big fields one o various neighboring farmers. The system
of production is intensive with high population of plants),
high doses of fertilizer, and use of manpower. The manpower
is important in the detaseling that is done 95% by hand,
besides in the crop, wich 5% is carries out way ( in
plots with bad fertilization).
The sanitary climatic and mamaging conditions, allows us
to obtain an average a yield per hectare superior to
those of the USA or of Europe and better quality seed
(germination, caliber and purity). All these characterists
Chile the ideal conditions for the development of the
winter season for the northern hemisphere.
